The three lines on handwriting paper

Handwriting paper has a top line, a dashed midline and a baseline. Tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) reach the top line; short letters (a, c, e, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z) sit between the midline and baseline; and descenders (g, j, p, q, y) drop below the baseline. Capitals and numbers touch the top line. Practising with these guides builds consistent letter size, which is the biggest single factor in how neat handwriting looks.

Teaching letter formation in families

FamilyLettersStarting stroke
Curly caterpillarc, a, d, g, o, q, e, s, fStart like a “c”: up and round anticlockwise
Long ladderl, i, t, j, u, yStraight down, then flick or curve
One-armed robotr, n, m, h, b, k, pDown, back up the same line, then over
Zigzag monsterv, w, x, zDiagonal strokes

Letter families (names vary between programmes) group letters that share a first movement, so practising one family reinforces a single motor pattern.

Common handwriting problems and fixes

ProblemTry this
Letters different sizesUse ¾-inch lines and focus on the midline
Words squashed togetherLeave a finger space between words
Letters floating above the lineTrace the baseline in colour first
Reversals (b/d, p/q)Teach b as “bat then ball”, d as “c then line”
Very heavy pressureSofter pencil, pencil grip, rest the hand between lines
Tiring quicklyShort daily sessions and fine-motor play

Practice routine

  1. Warm up: shoulder rolls, finger stretches, a few loops and zigzags.
  2. Trace one letter family, saying the stroke directions.
  3. Copy the letters independently.
  4. Write words using those letters.
  5. Finish with a sentence, checking size, spacing and alignment.
  6. Keep it to 10–15 minutes.

Handwriting for adults

Adults can improve handwriting too. Slow down, use a comfortable pen with smooth flow, and practise on ½-inch lines. Copy a paragraph a day from a book you enjoy, focusing on one thing — consistent x-height, even spacing or upright slant. After a few weeks, compare with your first page.

Worked example

A seven-year-old’s writing has large, uneven letters that drift off the line. The parent prints ¾-inch paper, starts with the curly caterpillar family, and asks the child to trace the baseline in green before writing. After two weeks of 10-minute sessions the child moves to ⅝-inch lines and sentence copywork, and the checklist shows spacing is now the main thing to practise.

Frequently asked questions

What is manuscript handwriting?

Print handwriting, where letters are written separately rather than joined.

What line size should beginners use?

1 inch or ¾ inch lines.

How long should handwriting practice last?

About 10–15 minutes a day is enough for most children.

Print or cursive first?

Most schools teach print first, then introduce cursive around ages 7–8.

How can I help with letter reversals?

Teach letters by their starting stroke and use visual cues such as “bat then ball” for b.

Are these suitable for adults?

Yes, use the ½-inch paper and copywork pages.

Was AI used to create the worksheets?

Worksheets were generated by script and text drafted with AI assistance, then reviewed before publishing.
